An HMO unlike a PPO requires you to only see doctors in an established network of health care providers. HMO’s are less expensive because of that but they also (depending on the health insurance company) may have other limited coverage’s.

If you have an HMO, you more than likely are insured through an employer. HMO’s originated from the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973 which required employers with more than 25 employees to offer a health care plan.
